Vital Records

Vital records are official documents issued by individual states that verify significant events such as births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and civil unions. Vital records are important because you must provide one when you want to get a driver's license or identification card. They are also used for other purposes like getting a social security card and are sometimes required to secure a job. The Nebraska Department of Health manages all vital records, including their official issuance. Those eligible to receive vital records are those whose name appears on the document. For instance, you may obtain a copy of your birth certificate if you are the individual named on that birth certificate. Birth certificates are often used as a means of identification – to obtain entry into an educational institution, for a passport, for social security benefits, and driving privileges.
